Macaranga conifera (Zoll.) Műll.Arg. Trees up to ca. 33 m tall and 70 cm dbh, reproductive from 3 m tall and 9 cm dbh. Twigs solid, usually glabrous, sometimes hairy. Stipules triangular to ovate, semi-persistent, 7-16 mm long by 2-6 mm wide. Petioles usually glabrous, sometimes hairy, up to 11 cm long. Leaves alternate, ovate, rarely peltate, 6-14 cm long by 2.5-8 cm wide, length width-ratio 1.40-2.75; secondary veins 7-11, not ending in the margin; leaf base sometimes slightly cordate, peltate margin length (when present) 0.2-0.5 cm; leaf upper surface usually glabrous, sometimes hairy, rarely with 2-4 basal nectary glands (only in combination with hairy plants) on tertiary veins near the petiole insertion; leaf lower surface usually glabrous, sometimes hairy, glaucous, densely gland dotted. Staminate inflorescences branched; flowers clustered per bracteole; bracteoles with fimbriate margins. Pistillate inflorescences branched; fruits 6-8 mm wide, 2-locular, rarely with few very short spines, fruit surface completely covered with yellow glands. Ecology: Collected up to ca. 1100 m altitude. An early successional tree species growing on disturbed places in primary forest (gaps) and secondary forest. Distribution: Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and the Philippines. In Borneo it has been collected in Sarawak, Brunei, Sabah, West-, Central-, East- and South-Kalimantan. |
